Asphyxia

When an Infant Suffers from Asphyxia …

Perinatal asphyxia is a condition that can occur before labor, during labor, during delivery or after birth. The attending doctor must diagnose the condition quickly and appropriately if the baby is to recover without suffering brain injury or death.

If you suspect that your baby was injured or died because of asphyxia, discuss your concerns with an experienced medical malpractice attorney at the Phoenix law firm of Snyder & Wenner, P.C..

Asphyxia causes oxygen deprivation — hypoxia — and can lead to serious, permanent brain damage including cerebral palsy. Asphyxia can also damage other organs. The sooner asphyxia is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis.

Failure to diagnose and treat asphyxia is medical negligence.

Perinatal asphyxia can be caused by a number of circumstances:

  • A sudden drop in the mother's blood pressure
  • The umbilical cord being wrapped around the baby's neck
  • The baby being in the birth canal too long
  • The baby not receiving the necessary oxygen to preserve brain or organ function

Careful monitoring and appropriate medical treatment is essential in asphyxia cases. Symptoms include poor coloring, decreased responsiveness, low blood pressure, impaired respiratory effort, abnormal blood gases or inadequate oxygenation.

If your child was injured by any birth trauma including perinatal asphyxia, contact the lawyers at Snyder & Wenner, P.C.. We have a network of medical experts who can review the case and determine whether accepted standards of care were followed.

We are selective in the cases we take, because we want to devote the necessary time and resources to every case. If your child suffered serious injury or wrongful death because of perinatal asphyxia, tell us about it.
